Chapter 090

the INTERVIEW

How to Handle an Employee Death

Something shocking, overwhelming, and unexpected happens in our workplace everyday. It impacts some people immediately, while others have delayed reactions. Some have adverse effects for a long period of time, while others recover rather quickly. Are you prepared to deal with an employee death and the effects it has on the co-worker and the company?

Trish Hinton, LCSW, and Sandy West, LMSW are EAP Consultants as well as staff clinicians for ProMax Employee Assistance Program.  Trish is a LCSW who graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1977 with a masters in social work. Sandy graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1999. They both have training in Mediation, Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, and grief counseling as well as expertise in numerous other areas.  They will be presenting how death of an employee impacts the workplace.

Dan Woods, SPHR Honored for Life-Time Achievement

The  Jim Wilkins Lifetime Achievement Award was established in honor of Jim Wilkins, SPHR, who was the SHRM Area IV Manager for  5 years. During those years, Jims dedication, hard work and enthusiasm served as an excellent example for each of us to follow.

Right:  Dan Woods says a few words after accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award from Jim Wilkins and Tona Schmidt.

This year Dan Woods, SPHR, is the recipient of this award. Dan is one of the founding members of our association, joining the association in 1954.  He has retired from Timex, but certainly not from the profession.  Some of his achievements include:

Receiving the very first Equal Employment Opportunity Award ever given in the State of Arkansas in 1963 by the Urban League, receiving jointly with the HR management of Teletype Corporation for successfully ending the operation of a segregated plant, with no repercussions among the employees.

Negotiating 53 (fifty-three) major labor contracts both in Little Rock and in other Timex locations, plus several wage re-openers in some of the contracts without any strikes, and all without exceeding any pre-established management bargaining authorities.

Playing a major role in securing the passage of critical legislation in Congress in the Caribbean Basin bills, and on GSP tax bills, working through the Arkansas delegation in Washington, D.C.

Earning the first certification in the State of Arkansas as Accredited Executive in Personnel, later renamed Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).  Before he retired, he received a life-time certification as SPHR.

Serving as President of AHRA in 1960, Dan became active in taking positions on legislation, and trying to do something about it, rather than just discussing it.

He testified before Congress in 1965 concerning Workers Compensation issues and Unemployment Legislation

Dan was chairman of a group that encouraged HR professionals in the northwest portion of the state to form their own professional organization.  The result, not one, but two organizations formed one in Fort Smith, the other in Fayetteville.  In 1969 at a management meeting in Mississippi, Dan met Len Brice, the managing director of ASPA (American Society of Personnel Administrators), which later became SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management).  Dan invited Mr. Brice to return to Little Rock with him and set up meeting with those in authority for AHRA.  The meeting resulted in our Arkansas organization becoming affiliated with SHRM, a move that has greatly enhanced HR professionalism in Arkansas.

Dan graciously accepted the award at the State Conference in Fayetteville.  He thanked God, his bride Dorothy of fifty years, and encouraged everyone to earn the respect of their employer and give them a good days work.

Dan, thank  you for all you have done for our profession.  We appreciate all of your dedication and hard work!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings CAHRA Members and happy May to you.

To all of you who attended the State Conference, I want to say, "thank you!" and I hope you learned a lot and had a great time.  To those who were unable to attend the State Conference, I want you to know that Sam Carr, her Committee for next year's State Conference here in Little Rock, and all of us in CAHRA have our work cut out for us next year.  NOARK delivered an exceptional conference, setting a new record for registered attendees - 325!  I look forward to seeing you at the May meeting so we can build upon the success from the State Conference.

See you at the door!"

Allen

MEMBER OF THE MONTH

CAHRA member of the month is Melanie Rogers.  She is the Human Resources Training Assistant for Youth Home, Inc.

Melanie has been a member of CAHRA since March of 2002.  She has not served on any committees yet, but she is a current member of SHRM and was a student member of NOARK from 1997-1998.  She recently moved back to the Little Rock area from Dallas where she worked as a People Specialist for The M/A/R/C Goup, a marketing research firm.

Melanie states that the reason she chose HR was: I knew that I wanted a career in business and one where I would be helping people.  When I was a freshman in college, I went to Career Services and took a career placement test.  It helped to decide to major in HRM and Im very glad I did!

Melanie feels that some of the important issues that Human Resource professionals may be facing in the future are: Coming up with creative (and effective) ways to cut costs for the company instead of laying off employees.  This is often a decision that is out of our hands, but if we can come up with other options for the decision makers, we may not only save someone elses job, but we may be saving our own some day.

If Melanie had one thing to tell other HR professionals it would be: What goes around, comes around.  Were often faced with hard decisions in our line of work (who isnt?), but I think its important to remember that we are here to serve the employees as well as the company.  I think people tend to forget the part about the employees, but I feel its very important to treat everyone the way that you would want to be treated.

She further adds: Im very glad to be back in Little Rock.  I had forgotten how it seems that everyone knows everyone here.  The Six Degrees of Separation Theory is definitely true in LR.  I, for one, think its great and Im looking forward to being reacquainted with the people I knew here before as well as meeting new people.

Betsy Knight, VP of Member/Chapter/PEG Relations with the Society for Human Resource Management  formally announced on  April 23 that bylaws and name change to Central Arkansas Human Resource Association has been approved. "Walk Awhile in My Shoes"

   By Eric Harvey

  Steve Ventura

I am every employee, and I work in every part of this organization. My collar is blue, pink, and white and frequently stained with the sweat that comes from hard work.

I am man, and I am woman. Im every color, every belief and every size. Im old, young, and everything in between. Ive worked here longer than you and not as long as you. I am a daughter. I am a son. Im married and single, a parent and without children. Im alone and Im surrounded by people I care about deeply.

Sometimes you may think of me as only a number, or perhaps just another small cog in a very large wheel that you have to manage. But like you, I am a human being filled with joys, fears, frustrations, and hopes. I feel, I laugh, and I hurt. And, like you, I want to be understood, accepted and appreciated.

Shey Anderson, CAHRA Diversity Chair

STATE CONFERENCE

The Arkansas Human Resources 2002 Field of Dreams Conference was a great success.  There was a record breaking crowd of 310 registrants this year.  It was the best attended conference to date for Arkansas, apparently having it in April went over very well.

All of the speakers were wonderful.  Topics from leadership, to Being a Major Leaguer to safety and governmental affairs were covered.  The keynote speaker was Johnny Bench, the 14-time All Star and Hall of Fame catcher.  Jim Ward, hypnotist, also put on a great show during the dinner Ozark Hoe Down.  Some of your fellow Human Resource professionals thought that they were stars such as The Beatles, The Crocodile Hunters Steve Irwin, and Garth Brooks.

By all accounts it was a wonderful event.  If you did not attend this year, mark your calendars for next year, the Central Arkansas Human Resources Association will be the sponsoring chapter right here in Little Rock!

Jim Corter, SPHR

 is the recipient of the

2002 Professional of the Year Award.

Jim is President of Corter Consulting in Jonesboro.  He has served his chapter, holding numerous offices and serving on even more committees, often as chair.  He was President of his association twice.  He has served on the SHRM State Council for a number of years, holding a variety of positions.  He is a former State Conference Chair and is currently the Professional Development Coordinator.  He is a role model for HR professionals and a good friend to all.   Jim is shown here with his wife Nancy.
