Program Topic:  Unconscious to Conscious: Understanding Bias

Program Description: Traditionally, CAHRA’s October program is reserved for a special focus on diversity and inclusion.  This year, we delve into the topic of “unconscious bias”, which refers to the stereotypes, both positive and negative, that exist in our subconscious and affect our behavior. Our speaker, Martie North, will lead the program that focuses on gaining a better understanding of these biases.  We will explore how culture gives context to biases, types of unconscious bias, how our unconscious biases affect the recruiting process, and understanding the cultural competence continuum.

Speaker Bio:  Martie North currently serves as Senior Vice President and Director of Community Development/CRA for Simmons Bank, a $8.4 billion dollar financial institution headquartered in Pine Bluff, Arkansas serving over 100 communities in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Tennessee.  North is responsible for developing systems, implementing policies and procedures, monitoring performance and training staff regarding compliance with the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) along with fostering community development efforts within low wealth communities.  She has a proven track record of developing a variety of successful financial instruments that support low wealth communities, and advising executive management on issues relating to affordable housing and community development.

North provides hundreds of hours of technical assistance to nonprofit organizations and community initiatives across Arkansas. She was one of the visionaries and creators of the Arkansas Coalition of Housing and Neighborhood Growth for Empowerment (ACHANGE), one of the founders of the Friends of Mosaic Templars Cultural Center (Friends of MTCC), and also spent five years as a member of the NeighborWorks® America faculty staff.

North is a graduate of Harding University having earned a Bachelor of Science degree along with numerous national certifications in homebuyer education, housing counseling, credit counseling, and community/mortgage. She is a sought-after speaker, having developed numerous programs on many topics, including Cultural Competency.
