The Interview

Business Ethics

Business Ethics is no longer an oxymoron in todays Corporate America. This presentation covers new information regarding trends in corporate ethics that came from Enron and other corporate scandals. Effects of the new Sarbanes-Oxley legislation on companies are explored as well as their impact on Human Resources Departments. Also included are scenarios of companies that have made good ethical decisions and those that have made poor ones and the results that those choices made on the success or failure of these companies in the public eye.

For the past ten years, Dr. Janice Barnsley has been in the corporate world and has experienced both sides of mergers and acquisitions. She has been the Deputy Ethics and Compliance Officer at Tyson Foods for several years and is currently serving a dual role as the both the Deputy and Interim Chief Ethics Officer.

In these roles, Dr. Barnsley is responsible for the corporate-wide rollout of the Ethics Program, Ethics Training, overseeing the Ethics Help Line and investigations from those calls, and as liaison between the company and USDA and other governmental agencies.

She has journal publications on teaching, co-authored several national educational presentations, and developed a graduate-level instructional design module for desktop publishing for the University of Arkansas Educational Technology Department, along with video publications on a variety of topics for the U of A Division of Student Services.

Dr. Barnsley is our luncheon speaker.

Diversity in the Workplace

The intrigue of life is diversity. However, differences in one another can foster misunderstanding. In order to effectively communicate with someone who is different, a bridge of understanding and acceptance must be built. The bridges on our lives make it possible to connect with one another. Ironically, the connections or bridges are what validates our humanity and provides the emotional and environmental foundation that gives richness and meaning to our lives.

Cultural diversity within the workforce broadens our perspectives, teaches flexibility and demonstrates another way to see or do things. This session will explore the issues of prejudice and bias.

  • You will be able to define Bias and Prejudice

  • You will understand the concept of diseased organisms

  • You will identify your prejudices and biases

  • You will be exposed to the richness of diversity

  • You will learn how to build bridges that create connectedness

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

CAHRA 2003 CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Hello all. I am just freshly back from the SHRM Conference in Orlando. I was very proud to see several of you there. If you did not see me at all, it was because you missed the opening session Tuesday morning where I got a chance to discuss my favorite movie with about
9 ,000 other SHRMites on the big screen (just bragging). If you have never been to the SHRM National Conference, let me tell you that it is something that you should strongly consider in the near future. It is not often that you get to discuss hot topics with the one who wrote the book.

Your National Chapter is in the progress of changing the way they do business. They are changing to better support you and their new motto: Serve the Professional. Advance the Profession. They are consolidating areas by regions, eliminating levels to make a flatter more responsive organization to serve you. Many pockets of special information that was available only if you were in a Professional Emphasis Group (PEG) will be made available to every one at no additional cost.

Reminder Please..please use your web site, www.cahra.info. We cannot put everything into The Interview, and we just do not have the time to cover the wealth of information we now have available to us during our monthly meetings. We are trying to conserve as much time as possible in our monthly meetings so that we can optimize our speakers time and your networking time. We have made several modifications this year to facilitate timely meetings. I hope you have noticed.

This year we have had three nationally ranked speakers and have one more on the way. Just as SHRM, we too are doing our best to serve the professional and to advance the profession, right here at the Central Arkansas Human Resource Association. Please let us know if there is something you need.

COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT MEMBER OF THE MONTH
The objective of the Certification Committee is to serve our members pursuing either the Professional in Human Resources or the Senior Professional in Human Resources certification. The committee coordinates twice yearly study groups who meet to discuss the certification test topics and prepare for the test itself. Arranging for instructors to cover the various modules of the test is a function of the committee. Certified members of CAHRA are invited to lead group discussion in their topic area to help clarify questions the participants have about the subject or about the test experience. Members who have assisted in this work for 2003 include Steve Schulte, SPHR Strategic Management, Phebe Duff, SPHR HR Development, Stephen Daniels, PHR Compensation and Benefits, Charlie Brown, SPHR Employment and Jim Watson, SPHR Labor Relations.

Encouraging professional certification is a part of our chapter and SHRMs mission to advance the profession. Helping people to study and prepare for the exam is one way we are accomplishing that mission. Going through the certification study and testing process provides an opportunity for HR professionals to develop their knowledge of areas that may not be a factor in their every day work environment and provides a means of verifying their mastery of the HR body of knowledge. The study session is open to CAHRA members for a $50 fee and to non-members for a fee of $125. The non-member fee includes a one year membership in CAHRA. Study materials are not included in the fee and participants are encouraged to obtain their own copy of the SHRM Learning System. The groups typically meet on six consecutive Saturday mornings beginning in mid-February and again in mid-September to coordinate with the HRCI test dates in May and December.

Participation in this committee affords an opportunity to share your knowledge and experience in a relaxed, open forum setting. You can sign up for one topic or join with other volunteers to cover a topic as a panel of experts. Dont think that only those with years of experience can be study group leaders. Often, those people who are new to the field and have just taken the test are able to provide considerable insight into the testing process. Helping others grow in the profession can be personally rewarding and you get to enjoy a little bit of the credit as you watch your students successfully pass the examinations! Volunteers find they usually learn something new with each study group.

If you are interested in participating as an instructor or would like more information about the Certification Study groups, contact Garry Rowe at [email protected] or call him at 851-5487.

Members of this committee include:

The July Member of the Month is Peggy Moss. Employed at the Arkansas Department of Economic Development as a Personnel Officer II, Peggy has been a member of our chapter since December of 2002 and serves on the College Relations Committee. She joined CAHRA because she wanted to find an environment in which she could continue learning about the Human Resources field.

Peggy took an introductory course in Human Resources and decided that was where she wanted to be. The variety of the field is what attracted Peggy to HR that every day is something new. She enjoys the opportunity to visit with many different people about topics very near and dear to their hearts, from the work they do to the benefits that affect their families.

She offers anyone considering entering the field this advice: maintain a positive attitude, keep an open mind and be ready for constant interruptions!

Peggy believes the ever-escalating cost of medical insurance will continue to be an issue for employers. It will be a burden to employers because employees today expect that to be included as part of their compensation. As costs continue to rise, it may become no longer feasible for employers to provide coverage in the future. This will affect their ability to recruit and retain employees.

Peggy and her husband Jason, a police officer with the City of Sherwood, have a 3-month old son named Brian and a Dalmatian named Louie. In addition to spending quality time with her family, Peggy enjoys attempting to grow plants and flowers in her garden.
